AR Rahman: Orchestral music has been close to my heart

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 08:31 AM PST

Music maestro AR Rahman speaks about experimenting with his film music for Orchestra Babelsberg

As renowned German film orchestra Babelsberg recreates the music of AR Rahman on stage in Mumbai, India's famous composer says it was enriching to translate his works for this genre and he wants to educate the youth on orchestra music. "Imagine when 80-100 people are working hard to make one song, a song that moves you…it is amazing to hear orchestra music," Rahman said. "We have selected a few pieces of my compositions for the orchestra to play Friday evening. While it was difficult choosing from them, I wish I had got a chance to compose new music for the performance."

Over 100 orchestral musicians will perform live Rahman's compositions at the National Centre for the Performing Arts (NCPA) Friday as part of 'Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities'. Titled 'Classic Incantations', the orchestra will play 16 of Rahman's best works, including Mangal Pandey, Slumdog Millionaire, Lagaan, Bombay and Meenakshi.

Rahman who will be part of the countrywide tour with the orchestra said he intends to educate the youth on orchestra music. Talking about the challenges faced while translating his compositions to orchestral performance, he said: "It sure was challenging, but also enriching at the same time. When a composition is played live by skilled musicians, it only becomes richer." Rahman said it was enjoyable to work on compositions from Roja and Swades while translating them into orchestral music. "We have also experimented with many compositions, Chan chan from Water being one of them. I am sure it will be a pleasurable experience to hear the orchestra play the compositions," Rahman said.

Rahman has heard an orchestra play in Birmingham and then in London. "Since then, orchestral music has been close to my heart," he said.

When asked about the compositions he had to leave out, the maestro said he would have loved to have a score of 1993 comedy thriller Thiruda Thiruda in the performance. "It was only the second or third year that I started composing film music. Thiruda Thiruda was a major hit and I loved every bit of the music score of the film and hence it is close to my heart," he said.

Rahman, who draws inspiration from several musical influences, says inspiration comes sublimely. When asked about his perception of Western classical music, Rahman said there are several threads that just inspire one to create one's own compositions. "For example, while I was listening to one of the orchestra members playing the cello, I was inspired to sit down and write a whole new composition involving the cello as the main instrument," he said.

When asked about being called the 'Mozart of Madras', the shy Rahman said he does not deserve the title. "It is not fair on a maestro like Mozart. He was a classical composer and I am a mere composer of film music," he said. "I would like to repeat what I said in my book (AR Rahman: The Spirit of Music): 'Leave Mozart alone'," he added.

Matt Dunkley, the conductor of the orchestra, says he has been associated with Rahman for over 10 years now and is always amazed with the compositions. "Rahman was in London while recording music for 'Bombay Dreams', a Bollywood-themed musical in 2001-02. He also had to compose music for another of his films, 'The Legend of Bhagat Singh', and he decided to record it with a live orchestra," Dunkley said. "I got in touch with him and arranged for the orchestra and have been together since working on several of his films, including 127 hours," he said.

Speaking about Rahman's compositions, Dunkley said he only has to enhance his compositions. "It is the relationship of trust that we share. I trust his music. His compositions just need to be enhanced by adding a few strings here and a harp there." And about translating Rahman's tunes to orchestral music, Dunkley said: "There are many ways of treating music. It can be done in so many different ways. But the foremost is respecting music. With the respect comes the best of compositions. With Rahman's compositions, it was simple. I have just taken his various different tunes in a movie and stitched them together."

I play sad and lonely guy in Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu - Imran Khan

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 07:59 AM PST

Imran Khan After an eventful 2011 where he had 2 huge hits in the form of Delhi Belly and Mere Brother Ki Dulhan (MBKD), Imran Khan is now all set to kick-start 2012 with a bang with UTV and Dharma Productions' Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu (EMAET) opposite Kareena Kapoor. The promos of the film have created quite a buzz and Imran hopes he hits the jackpot with Dharma once again after I Hate Luv Storys (IHLS) . Dressed in a casual white tee and jeans, and sporting a bearded look (for his forthcoming film Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola), Imran chats up with Bollywood Hungama's Nikhil Ramsubramaniam on his experience working on EMAET and much more. Read on…

Looking at various elements such as Vegas, Marriage, Chapel, Hangover, Divorce, etc. in the promos it seems like EMAET bears an uncanny similarity to the Hollywood flick What Happens in Vegas? What do you have to say about that?
These are similarities that our film shares not just with What Happens In Vegas but also with Two To Tango, The Hangover and even a certain episode of FRIENDS. But beyond that each of these films are different in their own way. What Happens In Vegas was about this boy and girl who win a jackpot and how both of them begin to con each other in order to keep the prized money whereas our film EMAET is a relationship based film. It's about this guy who has had a very restricted life and how his life changes completely when he meets this full of life and bubbly girl is what forms the crux of the story.

You play Rahul, an out of job architect…could you tell us a bit more about your character?
Like I said the character I play has had a very restricted life. His parents have always told him what to do, how to behave, what to study, what career to pursue and so on and so forth. Even his hobbies have been decided by his parents. He has never had a spontaneous moment in his life where he has done something for himself. He is actually a very sad, lonely and tragic guy but he doesn't realize it. He thinks this is how life is until he meets this girl (played by Kareena) who is so vibrant, bubbly and full of life. She shows him what he has been missing out on so many years and opens the curtains of the world for him. So in a way, the film is based on the relationship between these two characters.

Imran Khan You've been wanting to work with Kareena for the longest time…now that you've got the chance with this film, what are the things that you learnt from /admire about her?
What I admire about her is unfortunately what I cannot learn from her. She has this inherent ability to Switch ON and Switch OFF with amazing ease. When she was giving her shot, I just stood there mesmerized by her. She has this magnetic personality which is quite hard to describe in words. It has to be experienced and I am glad I got a chance to do that with this film

Since you guys have never worked together before, was it tough to break the ice initially?
Not at all…Kareena is really chilled out. She is unaffected by her stardom. She is a huge star and a stunningly beautiful woman yet it seems like she doesn't care about these things and hence doesn't carry around her stardom like baggage. Off-screen she doesn't care about how her hair is, how her make-up is etc. She is just ready to submit to the director's vision which I think is an incredible quality.

You've known Shakun Batra (the director) for a long time now…how do you think he has done for his first film?
Shakun is very clear about what he wants and he has an interesting way for going about it. You will never see him raise his voice or lose his temper yet when he wants his actors to act in a particular way he makes sure that he gets exactly what he wants. He and I are very close so there were no issues at all but for him to hold ground against a superstar like Kareena showed that he has substance.

The film has an interesting supporting cast- Boman Irani, Ram Kapoor, Ratna Pathak Shah…a bit about them.
Most of these roles were written with these very actors in mind. Shakun and Ayesha were very clear that they wanted Boman and Ratna to play my parents so the characters were largely written keeping them in mind. I have always been a great believer that the better actors you work with, the better your work becomes. Boman is a great guy and a great actor. He puts in so much energy to enhance your performance. Even when they were taking my close-up shots and he wasn't required in the frame, he would stand close by and give me cues so that I am able to deliver the best shot. He truly believes in supporting his co-actors and it's been a joy and delight to work with. As far as Ratna Pathak Shah is concerned, I believe that some of my best scenes till date have been with her in Jaane Tu…Ya Jaane Na. We shared a beautiful mother-son relationship in that film. In this film too, she plays my mother but unfortunately we share a completely different relationship this time around as Ratna and Boman play authoritative and dominating parents. So there is not much warmth in the parent-son relationship. Nevertheless it was a fab experience working with all these talented actors.

Imran Khan Dharma Productions gave you your big hit HLS when you needed it the most…Looking forward for an encore with EMAET?
I would hope so man. I share a great relationship with Dharma Productions. I have the highest amount of regard for Karan both at a professional and a personal level so for me it's like working with family

What are some of the crazy things that you guys did while shooting in Vegas?
I know it sounds boring but we didn't have any time whatsoever to do anything apart from shoot. We were shooting during winter in Vegas and that time of the year, the sun sets early around 4:30pm. We couldn't pack up so early, as it wouldn't have been cost effective so we ended up doing double shifts. We would shoot from morning 6 am till around 9 pm post which I just had enough strength to take off my make-up, bathe and fall asleep (smiles).

The music of the film has been given by Amit Trivedi, one of the youngest and brightest talents…how do you rate the music?
Amit is a guy who has done a lot of good and different work in a very short period of time. In each film he has given music for, he has managed to come up with a dramatically different sound and that I feel is quite amazing. What he has done with the songs of EMAET is also based on the demand of the script. A lot of the sounds you will hear in the film and album are not traditionally Indian. He has used a mix of blues and jazz to give the album a very fresh sound which adds so much to the mood of the film. 'Aahatein' is the most traditional of the lot. 'Auntyji' has this retro rock-n-roll vibe, while 'Kar Chalna Shuru' has a blues cum jazz feel to it so I think he has done a great job in understanding the world of the film.

You are days away from your first wedding anniversary…how does it feel being married for a year now?
It's been pretty much the same yaar. If you've been in a relationship for a long period of time (like Avantika and I) you realize that things don't really change post marriage. I've been sharing my life with Avantika for almost 9 years now so it's no big deal. The only real difference if you ask me is that now I have an official piece of paper from the Government that acknowledges our relationship which gives me comfort (smiles).

Imran Khan 2011, was an eventful year for you first with your marriage and then with 2 hits in the form of Delhi Belly and MBKD. How do you look back at the year gone by?
I couldn't have asked for a better year from marriage to 2 successful films. It gives me a great sense of high that both the films (Delhi Belly and MBKD) which I was a part of were profitable for all the people involved with it. I want everyone down the line to make money of my films so I am glad that the films were made in controlled budgets and recovered far more than that. Because of Delhi Belly, I am getting an opportunity to work with a filmmaker like Vishal Bhardwaj. I remember he called me shortly after watching the film and said that he loved my work. Soon after that, he offered me Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola so it feels nice when you get critical acclaim, commercial success and appreciation from your fellow industry people.

Finally you seem to be in look for Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola. Looking forward to working with Vishal Bhardwaj?
Of course. When I first read the script of the film, I asked Vishal sir, "You think I'll be able to pull it off." He told me, "Are you ready to work hard; if yes then I am confident you can do it." That was quite comforting. Matru Ki Bijlee Ka Mandola is a different kind of a comedy. It's a lighter film than what Vishal normally does. Even for me as an actor, it's a completely new role and get-up. I have to still grow this beard for another month before shoot begins and I have to bulk up so I am working out for that. I have to also learn Haryanvi. We start shooting at actual locations in Haryana from mid- Feb.

GALI GALI CHOR HAI item song: Veena Malik sizzles as Channo

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 06:31 AM PST

Click to Comment January 20th, 2012 Watch the hot Pakistani import giving the Sheilas and Munnis a run for their money

Finally, the much-talked about Veena Malik item number in Gali Gali Chor Hai is finally out. Composed by Anu Malik and sung by Mamta Sharma (who sang Munni badnaam hui), this song has the potential to be a rage in single screen theatres. Surprisingly, the Channo song sounds a lot like the Tinku jiya item number from Yamla Pagla Deewana. Thanks to the song, Veena will now have a new moniker – desi item bomb. She sizzles, doles out thumkas and happily heaves her glow-in-the-dark bosom as her co-dancers look on with lecherous delight. The lyrics are laced with typical rustic puns and the entire song has a village theme that reminds us a bit of Munni but not very much, as in many ways, it is worse. Veena tries hard but her bad make up and even worse costumes only hamper her efforts. Remember, this was the song that was touted to be Nicole Kidman's debut Bollywood item number. After watching the song, all we can say is: Nicole, lucky escape. But what do you think? Like it or hate it? Tell us!

Subhash K Jha speaks about Chaalis Chauraasi

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 04:58 AM PST

Subhash K. Jha speaks about Chaalis ChauraasiChaalis Chauraasi Four fine actors, one wild unpredictable night of adventure. As a premise for a two-hour adventure-caper this sounds exactly like the recipe Sudhir Mishra ordered from his scriptwriters when he made Iss Raat Ki Subah Nahin, 15 years ago.

Times have changed. So has morality. Nowadays guns are no longer what the villains hold in our films. They are often the tools to trigger of a torrent of titters in times of violence. In this day and age of dithering morality, Chaalis Chauraasi (4084) has some finger-licking fun with the formula of farce.

4084 is a feast of the feisty. Indeed Hriday Shetty who earlier directed a tender but undercooked tale of midlife romance Pyar Mein Twist, is here on far surer grounds as he takes his quartet of quirky characters through a maze of mind boggling adventures. All highly nefarious, of course.

So who said, crime doesn't pay?

The thing about the morality in this film's rapidly-mutating screenplay is that it's a negotiable commodity. There are episodes in this extremely rugged slice-of-strife cinema where the four protagonists' conduct scrapes the bottom of the morality barrel. This isn't a film for the weak-hearted .This is not a film about heroes. And the four principal actors play the unheroic heroes with compelling gusto.

Indeed the camaraderie among the quartet of over-aged fun-seekers is so convincing you wonder if the director Hriday Shetty came up with this brawny concoction of crime and comedy after getting Naseeruddin Shah, Atul Kulkarni, Kay Kay Menon and Ravi Kishan on board.

The rest just follows.

Chaalis Chauraasi There's no blood and gore, no abusive invocation of mothers and sisters and their private spaces. And yet the rollercoaster ride is never free of excitement. In spite of some repetitive scenes Bunty Negi's editing is crisp and sassy. The camerawork by Najeeb Khan makes Mumbai by night look famished and naked. Shetty has chosen actual locations of Mumbai's underbelly as resting-places for his restless plot. Into these redolent locations of cramped ethics, the narration pours a sort of sly and slippery street wisdom that gives the 'heroes' room to improvise without losing the centre of this precarious-perched tale of crime and nil punishment.

The shootouts especially in a lodge where the four protagonists masquerading as cops comes to a messy nemesis, are shot with a feeling of inebriated recklessness. Anything can happen. Nothing is as it seems. And yet director Shetty, manoeuvring through incidents that border on the absurd and yet preserve a core of credibility, takes the narrative screaming kicking though blessedly not abusing, through a night of adventures that have to be seen to be believed.

4084 is a crisply edited one-wild-night-on-the-wrong-end-of-town caper that manages an improbable merger of the sinister and the satirical. The four principal performers are dead-on, full of beans percolating with a pungency that makes them credible all through their incredible journey.

And you've to see the four super-actors dance to 'Hawa Hawa' to know how much fun they've extracted from the film. In this item song it's Atul Kulkarni who surprises with his spinning feet. And his three colleagues don't seem to mind. Oneupmanship is not the point in this game that big boys play in the dark.

Solidarity is.

Will Shriya Saran hit the big league in Bollywood?

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 04:31 AM PST

Shriya shot to fame after her appearance alongside Superstar Rajinikanth in the film, Sivaji – The Boss. She will now be seen with Akshaye Khanna in Rumi Jaffery's film, Gali Gali Shor Hai. It seems that unlike Asin, her peer in Tollywood, who is now working with the biggest stars of Bollywood, Shriya has had to wait for quite some time to hit the big league in B-town.

Shahid has a new friend, Chitrangada Singh

The actor and Chitrangada were seen bonding big time at recent awards

Shahid Kapoor seems to have found a new friend in Chitrangada Singh. The two were seen bonding big time at the recent Colors Screen Awards.

It was also at Sasha's suggestion that the actress was roped in to co-host a segment of the event with him.

Shahid, who also performed at the awards, was initially to anchor with Anushka Sharma.

However at the last minute, she was unable to do so. This was when Chitrangada stepped in, thanks to the actor's recommendation.

During the anchoring the duo's chemistry was to be seen. They were extremely comfortable with each other. "It appears that Shahid has hit it off well with Chitrangada.

They behaved like buddies. His growing friendship with the actress did attract attention at the venue, " says an onlooker.

Is Bipasha's hot item song 'Bipasha' inspired by Beyonce video?

Posted: 21 Jan 2012 12:31 AM PST

Salim Merchant denies that Beyonce's sensational 2006 number 'Beautiful Liar' inspired their new track titled 'Bipasha'

Six years back when Beyonce and Shakira came together for the song Beautiful Liar, it was deemed as one of the hottest music videos ever produced.

Now a song in Bipasha Basu's new film Jodi Breakers, named 'Bipasha' sounds way too 'inspired' by the number featuring the two international hotties.

We wonder why Salim-Sulaiman would create something that sounds way too similar to the English track, and not expect it to be noticed?

Says composer Salim Merchant, "I don't really know which song you are talking about, but what we have created is an original number.

We make sure none of our music sounds similar to anyone else's. Even if it sounds similar, it will never be entirely the same."

On her part, Bipasha says, "A lot of people have been interested in using my name in songs, but I am very protective about it.

Aishwarya in no hurry to return to films

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 10:31 PM PST

Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is enjoying motherhood to the fullest and she is in no hurry to return to films. Ever since she opted out of Madhur Bhandarkar's 'Heroine' due to her pregnancy, she almost disappeared from Bollywood. She devoted her complete time in bringing up her baby.

Though many offers are coming her way, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan is not taking any script seriously now. Many filmmakers left their script at Ash's door and asked her that when she feels to comeback to acting, she might contact them.

Post the birth of her first child, Aishwarya did not make any public appearances. Recently, she was first spotted at socialite Parmeshwar Godrej's party thrown in the honor international TV host Oprah Winfrey. Aishwarya Rai Bachchan gets offer from many well known filmmakers but presently she is not considering anything.

Her fans are eagerly waiting for her comeback. Hope, Aishwarya doesn't keep her fans waiting for a longtime and ablaze the silver screen once again.

Kareena read EK MAIN AUR EKK TU script twice

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 08:44 PM PST

Less than a month remains for the release of EK MAIN AUR EKK TU and debutant director Shakun Batra is confident that just like other Kareena Kapoor starrers, his debut film too would benefit immensely from the presence of an actress of her caliber.

''I know for sure that people would appreciate her performance. She has put a lot of her in EK MAIN AUR EKK TU. In fact this is one of the few scripts which she has read more than twice because she wanted to do something more in the film and grab the nuances well. If I look at the film objectively as a director as well as a member of the audience, I see this as one of her better performances,'' says Shakun.

CHECK OUT: EMAET- Imran-Kareena's Valentine's Day gift

Since the film is set in contemporary times with an urban set up to it, one wonders whether it would risk turning out to be a caricature affair with characters that come across as a tad stereotyped.

''See, the thing is that today many of us moviegoers stay in urban cities,' reasons Shakun, 'We dress in a certain way and people around us have seen an urban upbringing too. Yes, filmmakers tend to stereotype urban atmosphere but if we try hard, we can write such characters in 100 different ways. This is exactly the case in EK MAIN AUR EKK TU as well. Yes, it is a romcom with definite Western sensibilities to it. However for the Indian audience, it is going to be a unique experience for sure.''

We just hope that the promise is indeed kept once this Karan Johar production releases all over on 10th February.

Is Vidya Balan wary of being labelled a serious actor?

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 04:31 PM PST

After getting dirty in her last film, The Dirty Picture, Vidya Balan is set to do a sensuous item number for Vidhu Vinod Chopra's home-production, Ferrari Ki Sawaari

Having a squeaky clean image for a very long time probably didn't help Vidya Balan's cause. Her dare-bare avatar as Silk Smitha, has given her more publicity and clout in Bollywood, than almost all her films put together. Her first film in 2012, Kahaani, is another woman-oriented film and is already getting her rave reviews, and that's just for the trailer of the film. Kahaani will release mid-March and labels like 'art-house', 'serious film' are being thrown around. Apparently, one lesson that Vids has learned, thanks to Milan Luthria's The Dirty Picture, is that, all the audience wants is – entertainment. According to popular perception, a film like Kahaani is far from entertainment, mainly because the lead protagonist is a pregnant woman, looking for the father of the baby she is carrying. There is no scope for punch-laden dialogues, item songs et al. Kahaani might go on to be looked up as Vidya's best performance ever, but at the BO, we doubt if there would be even half the number of takers compared to her previous outing as the seductress. All through the promotions of The Dirty Picture, Vidya had said that she wouldn't be doing any item numbers for any film, as she has done and shown it all (well, almost) but the news that's just in, did surprise us. Vidya will be seen doing an item number in Vidhu Vinod Chopra's next production, Sharman Joshi-starrer, Ferrari Ki Sawari. While the details about the song, like how hot it is, what Vids is wearing (or not wearing), who is choreographing it etc is not known yet. All we know is that it will be sensuous! Wethinks, the curvaceous babe wants to undo any damage done to her popularity by her appearance in Sujoy Ghosh's film, with a bomb of an item number. Let us know if you are looking forward to going 'Ooh la la' over Vidya all over again.

Bittoo Boss approaches Censor Board again

Posted: 20 Jan 2012 04:19 PM PST

Bittoo Boss may have been shown a red flag by the Censor board but the film's first promo has won audience attention in a big way. With YouTube already registering over 1.5 lakh views of the film's 'uncensored promo', the 'ban' - as imposed by the Censors - has in fact further helped Bittoo Boss. However, the makers are not just relying on the controversy doing the trick. They have gone ahead and cut a new promo which is supposedly not as risqué as the original and is far more 'family friendly'.

"Bittoo Boss promotion has started on a good note and despite the film starring newcomers like Pulkit Samrat and Amita Pathak, it has managed to generate buzz. However, the makers don't want to be on the wrong side of the Censor board. They understand that the film to have a smooth run during the promotion and manage a good release, they would have to abide by Censor board's rules and regulations. This is the reason why a new promo has been designed", informs a senior member from the film's production team.

Though Censor board had apparently put a blanket ban on the film's promo due to extensive usage of 'le le' and other slangs, producer Abhishek Pathak - who debuted with cult comedy Pyaar Ka Punchnama last year - has gone ahead and tailored the same promo. While the basic context of the promo which establishes lead protagonist 'Bittoo' as the V.D.O. shooter remains intact, 'le le' etc. are being heard lesser than before. Also, since the slang is in the context of 'taking a picture', the reference is far better established also.

"Moreover the song 'Bittoo Sab Ki Lega', which plays in the background, has been toned down as well. The words have been changed to 'Hasa Hasa Ke Lega, Nacha Nacha Ke Lega' from 'Utha Utha Ke Lega, Jhuka Jhuka Ke Lega', adds Kumar Mangat Pathak, "We have done what we felt was appropriate. Now the ball is in Censor board's court."

As for the change being made, first time director Supavitra Babul was reluctant to begin with as he felt that far more 'fun-n-naughty' elements had been passed by the Censor Board in the past, case in point being Delhi Belly. However, he too has eventually agreed and is hopeful of the decision going in their favour.

He says, "It's okay, we want a smooth release for the film. If someone out there feels that a word or two is offensive, I am okay with that as long as the essence of the scene doesn't change. The new promo has been submitted to the Censor Board. We should hear back from them by this week."

Luke Kenny's directorial venture Zombie, has run into a title row with the producers of Rock The Shaadi. Producer Siddhartha Jain of iRock Media, who is co-producing the Abhay Deol- Genelia D'Souza starrer Rock The Shaadi along with Balaji, claims to have the rights to the same title.

Rock The Shaadi is a rom-com set against the backdrop of a Punjabi-meets-Zombie wedding. Siddhartha Jain was surprised to know that Luke Kenny was making a film called Zombie, when he owns the title. Only if Siddhartha signs a No Objection Certificate (NOC) can Luke release his film with the same title.

Luke, who just found out about the title row is trying to sort out the matter amicably.
